Chris began his career in the Turfgrass Science industry when he was seventeen years old. He was hired as help for a Summer at Woodway Country Club in Darien, CT. While he was primarily looking forward to fresh air and sun while working, he became fascinated with the extensive science that was behind the maintenance of grass at such a high level. He had been mowing his home lawn since he was twelve, but had never realized just how much there was to it.

Chris enrolled at Penn State University based on the stellar reputation of their Turfgrass Science program. While there, he spent Summers working in Turfgrass Pathology research, and at a Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course in the Pittsburgh, PA area. In 1994 he received a B.S. Degree in Turfgrass Science and returned home to Connecticut as the Assistant Superintendent of Rockrimmon Country Club in Stamford.

Though he had been working aggressively toward a career in Golf Course Maintenance, his own aspirations gradually shifted toward business ownership. Though he tried to stay the course he had set, entrepreneurial instincts took over and he quickly grew to dislike the daily grind of the golf course business. He left Rockrimmon to re-plan his career and soon met Peter Teed, who had been working for a local lawn care company as a manager and salesman. The two hit it off quickly and realized that they complemented each other well. In September, 2005 they incorporated their business as “GrassRoots Lawn Care, Inc.” The name was changed to Teed & Brown in August, 2004.

Chris enjoys writing the T&B Newsletter. He also has a published monthly lawn care column in the Danbury News-Times newspaper. Chris has appeared as a guest speaker at The University of Rhode Island, SUNY Cobleskill, Penn State University, and The University of Connecticut, and is a reccuring guest expert on the Mar Jennings Home & Garden Show appearing on Connecticut Channel 8.

Peter Teed

Peter Teed began his career in lawn care at 18 when he joined a National Lawn Fertilizer Corporation as a lawn service technician. In his first year of employment he was mentored by a co-worker with an Agronomy degree and Peter learned the science of lawn care. Peter’s first 2 years of employment were spent servicing lawns in Fairfield County and learning “hands on” about different types of soil, grass and the proper applications for both.

While he enjoyed making people’s lawns beautiful, he came to realize his true calling was meeting with and speaking to his clients. In his third year of work he was promoted from service to service and sales and was named #1 salesman in the country for the next 7 years. Though he was now in a more managerial position, he still maintained his connection to both lawn care service and to his clients.

While Peter always had aspirations of owning his own business, he wanted to keep his focus on the sales and client communications aspect of home lawn care. After meeting Chris Brown, he realized that a strategic partnership would allow him to do this. While Peter focused on his own strengths, Chris could take care of other aspects of business management. Over ten years later, things seem to have worked as planned.

Justin Barry

Justin is a native to Fairfield County. He was born in Norwalk, and grew up in Shelton. As an avid and successful athlete, Justin grew up spending a great deal of time in the outdoors on grass fields. While studying Business at Central Connecticut State University he spent his summers working for the Shelton Parks Department in a capacity that allowed him to learn many facets of sports field maintenance. This experience, coupled with his love of sports led Justin to look into a career in sports turf management. After reviewing the premier programs in New England, he settled on the Turfgrass Science Degree program at the University of Connecticut.

While studying at UCONN, Justin continued to work in sports field maintenance and spent a summer at Greenwich Country Club on the property management staff. As graduation neared, Justin began looking for career opportunities in all aspects of the turfgrass maintenance industry. When Chris Brown came to speak at UCONN during a recruitment opportunity, Justin became intrigued at the possibility of future business ownership that Teed & Brown offered.

In Spring, 2005 Justin joined Teed & Brown and quickly worked himself into a position managing a portfolio of lawns throughout the Greenwich and Stamford area. In 2006, Justin, Peter and Chris worked up a plan that would have Justin taking over the Northern Fairfield County Territory as an independent Franchise Owner of Teed & Brown. The official transfer of this ownership took place in Spring, 2008. Justin became the first independent franchisee of Teed & Brown. He is currently looking forward to further building the Teed & Brown name into one synonymous with the highest level of home lawn expertise and customer service.
